A small figurative study done in a very limited palette again. I haven't decided yet which is more difficult, the larger or smaller figurative pieces. The challenge is to get some expressiveness  in the painting regardless of size.

INTO THE CARIBBEAN BLUE

I had an absolutely fantastic time creating this mixed media painted and embellished art work. I dreamed each step of the piece ( memories inspired by a past visit to the Caribbean) and worked on it in stages.  I started by painting with Artist Acrylic paints on fabric and went on from there. Many components went into this painting on fabric along with some interesting sections created with the use of a heat gun and a candle. I also hand designed and painted the fabric I made the attached large beads from. I used high quality glass beads in some areas too - aqua silver lined glass beads and gorgeous multicolored glass bugle beads. Most of the stitched sections are done with an aqua or sea green metallic thread. Gesso, felt and acrylic paints were utilized to create the interesting add on shapes. You'll see from the next photo that the edges are finished by burning, it seemed like the right finish to complete this piece. Some may consider this an art quilt, but I just look at everything I do as art and will use whatever materials bring my project to life.

This small figurative painting is a little odd but I really like it. I used a very limited palette, that seems to really work for me in the figurative paintings. I like to keep the focus on values and this way of painting really allows that.

Yeah!!!!! I can finally post again. I was without internet service for 2 weeks; talk about net withdrawal. I switched providers so hopefully I'll be on track for a while. I missed blogging.

This is my newest floral watercolor painting. I was in the mood for corals and of course it had to be an hibiscus flower. I kept the background as abstract as possible to highlight the flower. I love the contrast between the corals and reds of the blossom against the green and blue background. I did not use any mask for this painting, just carefully painted around the areas I wanted to leave white. Enjoy the day!

A NORMAL DAY

This small watercolor sketch was done using a combination of only two colors. I think I caught the contemplative expression I was after. Working with a limited palette once in a while really helps reinforce the importance of values.

This small figurative painting was done late in 2009. I also did this one in a very limited palette so I could concentrate on movement. I did this in one session, a quick sketch and then painted with lots of water to get the soft effects along with the movement.

This small painting, AIR, was done with a very limited palette mixture in one session. The challenge to create movement by starting at the focal point and working your way around and back to the focal point was suggested by one of the instructors where I attended a summer class last year. It may seem simple to do, but it is not. Once you make your first brush stroke, each following one must be well thought out and then executed before your paint starts to dry. I'll be posting some other small figurative paintings over the next couple weeks. Thanks so much for checking in!

Even here in Hawaii the winter blahs can get on the nerves. We've had rain almost every day since early December. To inspire some cheer I decided to paint a cheerful flower. Doesn't it just light up the day? I wanted this watercolor painting to be a little on the impressionist side so the colors are mainly charged into wetted areas with the deeper shadows added in a second charged in layer. The background is a very rich mixture of charged in colors that combined to make an abstract background.

This one is a sample of one of the semi-realistic florals I did recently. I really had a lot of fun with this watercolor. I allowed the colors to merge together on the paper and was quite happy with the result.

If you could actually see this painting - the colors are so alive! It looks so watery and fresh. I love the way it turned out. Working on Yupo once in a while is a lot of fun.

I had an idea to use the colors of Hawaii, the red earth, the various shades of sand, sea and sky in an abstract piece. I love the turtles and have been able to swim with them a few times, no touching of course. Because of conservation efforts the population has increased in recent years. They are so beautiful and have been here for so long an age and hopefully will continue to thrive in these Hawaiian waters.

Two recent studies I did in a large group of watercolor and ink that I ended up happy with. I had experimented with several and some of course ended up as rubbish or to be used as recycled materials for other future mixed media pieces. I liked the differences in the subtle spirit of the first one compared to the richer mood of the second one.
