This was painted at Kewalo Basin, near Waikiki, looking straight out to the ocean. The day was cool and sunny -- a perfect Hawaii day. I wanted to jump right in!

I painted this once before, years ago, on an 18"x24" sanded pastel board and enjoyed composing it so much that I did it again on linen panel, but this time as a miniature. Anyone who has not been to Venice -- I urge you to go there, it is truly amazing -- Enough said!

I had an idea to use the colors of Hawaii, the red earth, the various shades of sand, sea and sky in an abstract piece. I love the turtles and have been able to swim with them a few times, no touching of course. Because of conservation efforts the population has increased in recent years. They are so beautiful and have been here for so long an age and hopefully will continue to thrive in these Hawaiian waters.

This piece is a true mixed media painting. It has suede leather, aluminum foil, patterned felt, wc paper, and burlap on a textured panel. I worked on this painting on and off all last week. There were several points where I applied some part and then had to wait overnight for the gel medium to dry.
Originally, I was playing around using real aspen twigs in the piece. I collected several twigs from the yard and tried to incorporate them into the design. Aspen branches do not grow flat! I could have overcome that problem, but my biggest concern was what would happen to them over time - would they deteriorate? I coated some with gel medium and they looked great, but I still was worried about the longevity. If anyone out there has any experience with using real tree branches in artwork, I would like to know about it.

Two recent studies I did in a large group of watercolor and ink that I ended up happy with. I had experimented with several and some of course ended up as rubbish or to be used as recycled materials for other future mixed media pieces. I liked the differences in the subtle spirit of the first one compared to the richer mood of the second one.
